Cozy games and why Garden of Hours earned a spot on my phone

I used to think a game needed stakes to hold my attention. Garden of Hours quietly proved me wrong. It has no fail state, no pressure, and it's still the thing I open most nights before bed.

The appeal is the rhythm. You plan a little, plant a little, wait, come back. It maps neatly onto the way I actually use my phone in the evening — short check-ins rather than long sessions. There's something calming about tending something that grows whether or not you're stressed.

It's not a game I'd recommend if you want a challenge, and I'd say that plainly. There's very little friction, and some people need friction to stay interested.

But as a wind-down ritual it's close to perfect. The seasons keep the routine from going stale, and slowly shaping a garden that feels like mine has been unexpectedly satisfying. Sometimes the point of a game is just to feel good.
